Guide to Cycling in Spring Green, WI

When you think of the midwest, you probably picture rolling hill landscapes, lush green forests, and crystal clear lakes. Though you won’t see all of this diverse scenery in southwestern Wisconsin, you’ll be able to cycle through the gorgeous plains in the place that inspired Frank Lloyd Wright.

Whether you adore cycling or you're a bit of a rookie, this cycling guide will help you determine which trails you should do, where you can rent a set of wheels, and answer any questions you might have about cycling in general.

The Best Bike Trails in Wisconsin

Here are some of the closest bike trails to Spring Green that we think are worth your time.

Taliesin Loop

Distance: 34.6 miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Because so many of our guests stay with us because of Frank Lloyd Wright, we highly recommend you try the Taliesin Loop surrounding his iconic property. The trail begins on WI-23 and circles around Taliesin, The House on the Rock, and a bunch of local farms.

If you’re used to mountain biking, this loop will feel like a breeze by comparison. There’s hardly any incline, and the relatively temperate weather complements a relaxing bike ride. Just follow the hills and enjoy the scenery.

Pine River Trail

Distance: 32.2 miles

Difficulty: Easy

Do you want to avoid riding on the main roads? The Pine River Trail might be the perfect hike for you. Rather than riding near cars like the Taliesin Loop, the Pine River Trail is an out and back ride that will guide you from Lone Rock to Richland Center. It’s a crushed limestone trail with a few sections with full paving. You can even ride on dirt for short periods.

You’ll pass a few scenic spots like Gotham Jack Pine Barrens State Natural Area the Wisconsin River. If you want to stop your ride for a while and enjoy the scenery, you are free to do so. Since it is an out and back trail, you may prefer to only ride halfway if you don’t want to go the 32 miles listed.

Great Sauk State Trail

Distance: 10.5 miles

Difficulty: Easy

Guests who only crave a short ride should drive west to Sauk City. Once parked on Water Street near the banks of the Wisconsin River, you’ll be able to hop on your bike and take off north toward the Sauk Prairie Recreation Area.

This ride is easy and perfect for riders of all ages. When you arrive at Great Sauk, it’s a great place to go birdwatching or hiking after your bike ride. You could also just ride back!
